20 Apr Tips For Day-To-Day Supply Teachers & TA’s
Calling All Day-To-Day Supply Teachers & TA’s
Whether acting as or seeking to become a day-to-day Supply Teacher or TA, we are here to help guide you. At Forward Teaching we work with day-to-day supplies every day and feel it’s important for us to share our top tips with you to help you become the most effective supply possible. So, let’s look at our top tips.
Remember Your Documents
Remember, remember the 5th of November, but instead of the 5th of November remember your DBS certificate and photo ID. Both documents must be taken with you when carrying out day-to-day supply work.
Ensure your DBS is in-date or on the update service. If working through an agency it is most likely that they would have checked your DBS is in date or registered on the update service before sending you into a school, but there’s no harm in checking for yourself to avoid any potential problems from occurring.
Check Your School
Here is where Google becomes your best friend. Search everything you can. After receiving confirmation of the school you are attending for the day, search them, browse their website, locate their address, and search their postcode individually.
You will find there are schools with the same or similar names, so it is important you double, triple check the name and address of the school you are going to.
Check Your Times
Timing is everything. After receiving confirmation of the school you are attending for the day, search their address and map out your route and how long it will take you to travel to the school. You will want to give yourself plenty of time to get to the school.
You should arrive early at the school to check your bearings, you will want to know who you are reporting to, where the toilets are, where to have lunch, and in the case of an emergency you will want to know where the fire exit and meeting points are.
Have Pre-Planned Lessons
If you are working for an extended period as a day-to-day supply Teacher or TA, it is valuable to have pre-planned lessons you can effectively use across a range of schools. You may find most schools will provide you with a lesson plan for the day, but it is useful to have some of your own planned for back-up.
Aim to make your lessons fun and engaging where possible. This will help you receive positive feedback from schools and may help you achieve a long-term position in the future (if this is what you wish for).
