Help Young Learners Build Confidence, Curiosity and Independence

Are you a caring, enthusiastic Teaching Assistant who enjoys supporting children during their early years of primary education?

Forward Teaching is welcoming registrations from KS1 Teaching Assistants interested in potential opportunities across primary schools in Southwark.

Key Stage 1 is an exciting stage in a child’s learning journey. From developing early reading and writing skills to building confidence with numbers, friendships and classroom routines, Teaching Assistants play an important role in helping children thrive.

Whether you have experience supporting Year 1 pupils, enjoy working with Year 2 children or are confident supporting learning across both year groups, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re particularly interested in connecting with individuals who bring patience, positivity and a genuine enthusiasm for helping young children learn.

About the Role

As a KS1 Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting pupils with classroom learning activities across Years 1 and 2.
  • Providing one-to-one and small-group learning support.
  • Helping children develop early reading, phonics, writing and numeracy skills.
  • Supporting structured learning interventions under the direction of teaching staff.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, confidence and independence.
  • Assisting teachers with classroom preparation and learning resources.
  • Supporting pupils with different abilities and additional learning needs.
  • Helping children develop positive friendships and social skills.
  • Creating a welcoming, inclusive and engaging classroom environment.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the school, year group and individual assignment.

Potential opportunities may include day-to-day supply, short-term classroom support and longer-term Teaching Assistant placements.

What We’re Looking For

We’re particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have:

  • Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school.
  • Experience supporting pupils within Key Stage 1.
  • Confidence supporting phonics, early literacy and numeracy activities.
  • The ability to work effectively with individuals and small groups.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A patient, encouraging and adaptable approach.
  • An understanding of positive behaviour management.
  • A genuine commitment to safeguarding and promoting children’s wellbeing.

A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification would be beneficial, although relevant practical classroom experience is also valued.

Experience supporting pupils with additional learning needs or delivering phonics interventions would be particularly welcome.
