Are you experienced in supporting autistic children and young people to feel understood, included and confident in their learning?
Forward Teaching is looking to connect with Autism Specialist Teaching Assistants interested in current and upcoming opportunities across Bexley and surrounding areas.
We’re keen to hear from experienced school support staff as well as candidates who have developed relevant autism experience in specialist education, care, childcare or other settings.
About the Role
As an Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant, you’ll help pupils access learning and participate positively in school life.
Every child is different, so good support starts with understanding the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Depending on the placement, responsibilities may include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support
- Helping pupils access classroom learning
- Supporting communication and social interaction
- Helping pupils manage transitions and changes in routine
- Encouraging independence and confidence
- Supporting emotional regulation
- Using visual resources and structured approaches where appropriate
- Working alongside teachers, SENCOs and other professionals
- Following individual support plans and safeguarding procedures
Exact responsibilities will depend on the school, pupil and individual placement.
Who Are We Looking For?
We’d particularly like to hear from candidates who:
- Have experience supporting autistic children or young people
- Are patient, calm and consistent
- Communicate clearly and sensitively
- Understand that behaviour can be a form of communication
- Can build positive, trusting relationships
- Are adaptable and willing to follow individual support strategies
- Work effectively as part of a wider team
Experience with communication needs, sensory differences, ADHD or other additional needs may also be valuable.
Relevant transferable experience outside a school environment may be considered.
Why Work With Forward Teaching?
At Forward Teaching, we want to understand more than the job titles on your CV.
We’ll take the time to learn about your experience, the pupils you’ve supported, your availability and the type of environment in which you work best.
Depending on availability, opportunities may include:
- Flexible daily supply
- Regular weekly work
- Short-term SEND support
- Longer-term placements
- Opportunities to develop experience across different school settings
Our aim is to make recruitment personal, straightforward and focused on finding the right fit for candidates and schools.
